Flight Instructor
Instrument Airplane Additional Rating
 

The Flight Instructor, Instrument Airplane Additional Rating (CFII-ASEL) flight training syllabus is designed to meet or exceed the requirements of 14 CFR Part 141, Appendix G.  Its design will allow an appropriately certificated Commercial Pilot, ATP, or Flight Instructor (ASEL) to acquire the proficiency and experience needed to meet the certification requirements for adding an Instrument Airplane Rating to their existing Flight Instructor certificate.  The performance criteria specified in the syllabus is based on the current FAA Instrument Rating- Airplane and Flight Instructor-Instrument Airplane Practical Test Standards.  All enrolled students of this course must meet these standards before graduation from this course.

 This flight training syllabus contains two (2) stages and includes a total of fourteen (14) separate lessons.  Each lesson includes an objective and a completion standard.  Each completion standard must be met in its entirety before that lesson may be considered complete.  The individual lesson and stage times are not mandatory and are included at the top of each lesson for flight instructor and student guidance only.  However, before graduation from the course, a student must meet the following minimum training hours:

The final lesson of the flight training syllabus is the end of course test.  This lesson is designed to ensure that the student has acquired the aeronautical knowledge and skills required by the current FAA Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane Practical Test Standards.

 
Enrollment Prerequisites:

The applicant must hold a valid Flight Instructor Certificate (Airplane) and a Commercial Pilot Certificate with an Instrument Airplane Rating or an ATP Certificate with an Instrument Airplane Rating.  The applicant must complete the required ground training course for the Flight Instructor, Instrument Airplane Additional Rating (ASEL) prior to the end of course test.  Ground training may be accomplished separately or concurrently.

 
Graduation Requirements:

To obtain a graduation certificate for the Flight Instructor, Instrument Airplane Additional Rating course, the applicant must:

  • Hold a current Airplane Category Flight Instructor Certificate.

  • Be able to read, speak, write and understand the English language.

  • Complete all ground training requirements.

    • Flight Instructor, Instrument Additional Rating Ground Training Course (20 hours)

    • FAA Flight Instructor, Instrument Airplane Written Exam

  • Complete all flight training requirements

  • Hold a valid and current FAA medical certificate.
