To obtain a Private Pilot License requires you complete a few steps:

  1. Pass a written exam – You can either attend our ground school one night a week for sixteen weeks. Our next ground school will not start until January some time. The other option to the ground school is too try and self study and pass the written exam on your own and supplement your flight instructor for areas you are having trouble with.
  2. You must also pass an oral exam and a flight exam. To qualify for the test requires you complete our flight training program. The course consists of 37 lessons and is a combination of solo flight, dual flights, and ground lessons. The course is broken down into 3 stages. The first stage is basic fundamentals. The second stage is weather, navigation, cross country etc, and the third stage is a recap of both stages and preparing for the final checkride to meet standards.

Enrollment in either the ground portion or flight portion can be done separately or concurrently. It all depends on what’s best for you. In a perfect scenario you would take the ground and flight portion together, but a majority of students take them at different times. If you do split them up, it doesn’t really matter which one you do first.

To enroll in the flight training course you must set up an appointment with me. We require a credit card deposit of $500 or a cash/check deposit of $1000. If you use the credit card we will deduct from the balance each time you fly. When the balance runs out, we will charge your card after each flight. If you use cash/check, you must maintain no less than a balance of $500 after the initial $1000 is reduced to $500.

When you enroll in the flight training portion, you will also need to have the following documents

  1. Birth certificate and/or passport (I assume you are a U.S. citizen)
  2. Drivers License
  3. 3 rd class student pilot medical certificate (This is obtained from a medical examiner that has been designated by the FAA to issue medicals). Click here for a list of medical examiners in the Melbourne Area.

Other items

1. The U.S. mean flight training hours to obtain the license if 62 flying hours. We usually can have you with a license in 50-55 hours. Based on the national average and what we see here from our students you can expect the flight training to cost approximately $8500-$10,000. The cost is broken down as follows:

Aircraft rental is 99/hr and 50/hr for the instructor. Each hour of flight time with an instructor will cost $149 plus tax.

2. Length of time to complete the program varies. On average a student who flight trains 3x per week can complete the program in 16 weeks. We like to see our students here at least 2x per week. This would usually have you completed in five to six months. If you have further questions, call the General Aviation Flight Services Department at (321) 308-2003.
